This was an exciting day for me… You’ve heard the term “a kid in a candy store”? I was invited by the night manager Nicole to turn on the Roy’s Motel Sign at dusk. To some this is not a big deal… To me, I’m Charlie Bucket standing in Bill’s Candy Store and getting the Golden Ticket. This sign — restored in 2019 — is the tallest thing for miles, and claims to be the most photographed sign on Route 66. Add in the Googie architecture and the surrounding ghost town buildings, it creates a very artsy, post-apocalyptic vibe.
